Dandruff Treatment

Specialized hair care can help those who have dandruff. Dandruff is a condition where skin cells fall off the
scalp much more frequently than normal, resulting in white flakes which are visible on the hair and often also the
shoulders. Hair care is the only way to manage dandruff, because it has no cure and no one specific known
cause.
Not surprisingly, the best way to improve the appearance of the hair of those with dandruff is to use a dandruff
shampoo. It is important, however, to realize that not all dandruff shampoos work the same way, so it may be
necessary to try out several different brands over the longer term in order to find a hair care regiment which
works best for a specific case of dandruff.
Some types of dandruff shampoos contain antifungal agents, for example the ingredient ketoconazole. This is
because some types of dandruff are caused by a species of otherwise harmless fungus, against which ketoconazole is
highly effective (indeed, this active ingredient is often present in medication for other fungal conditions such as
athlete’s foot). Be aware, however, that this type of dandruff shampoo would not provide relief from dandruff
originating from another cause.
Nizoral Anti-dandruff Shampoo
Yet other dandruff shampoos focus on adding moisture to the scalp, usually either through vitamins B and E, or
through essential oils in the shampoo. This method of hair care often results in some success, because an
excessively dry scalp is known to exacerbate dandruff.
A much-touted home remedy is washing the hair using vinegar instead of the shampoo. There is no strong data to
determine if this acidic solution helps, but anyone choosing to do it should take into account that vinegar imparts
a strong odor, so therefore the timing of application should be considered.
Another avenue used by dandruff shampoos is to rebalance the pH of the scalp. This can help in making the scalp
a less favorable environment for fungi, and also may make the scalp less prone to drying out. It is important to
note, however, that this rebalancing does not last long. Because this is such a temporary effect, this type of
dandruff shampoo is best only if used every day.
With regular hair care using the right shampoo, those with dandruff can improve the look of their hair and the
feel of their scalp. However, finding the right shampoo for an individual case of dandruff is a process of trial
and error.
