Most people want to have clean, great smelling, and beautiful
hair. Of course we use shampoo to clean it, go to the barber or
hairstylist for a cut or trim, and usually brush it several
times throughout the day. But styling is not nearly as
important as cleaning and maintaining it properly. So let's
look at how to wash hair.
In today’s society we associate proper hygiene with cleaning
and washing from head to toe every single day of the week.
However, not everyone believes that washing their hair everyday
is a healthy habit. There are others whole think that using
conditioners and shampoos everyday will cause damage and
dryness to your hair.
In fact, it is not the act of washing your hair daily that is
the problem. The problem is the chemicals you are exposing your
hair to. Not only does the shampoo or conditioner affect your
hair, but the water temperature that you use does as well. It
is important to read the labels of these products to ensure
that they are made for your hair type. The most common hair
types you will find are oily, dry, or
combination.
Once you have figured out your hair type and bought the proper
shampoo, it is important to use a proper temperature for
washing. You want to use water that is warm to the touch. When
the water touches your scalp it should not feel hot or cold.
Using hot water not only can scald you but it will wash away
the natural oils produce by your hair follicles. Using too old
of water will cause these hair follicles to close for an
extended period of time, long after the natural oils have been
washed away. One they become active again, they will over
produce and your hair will feel oily and
un-fresh.
Now that we know the proper water temperature, it is time to
get the shampoo. Again, this is another common place people
make mistakes. You do not need 1/2 a cup of shampoo to wash
your hair. A small amount in your palm should be enough. Gently
massage the shampoo in to your scalp creating a nice lather. If
you aren’t getting a good lather, then use a bit more shampoo.
You should always massage the shampoo in to your scalp because
massaging helps increase your blood circulation. This in turn,
allows your scalp to dislodge dirt, dead skin cells, and other
unwanted particles.
Another important step to washing your hair is rinsing. A quick
rinse is not the way to do it. It is important to get all of
the shampoo and residue off your hair and scalp. It is actually
recommended to rinse twice just to be sure. Having excess
shampoo will cause dryness and
irritation.
The last step in washing your hair properly is
drying it. The best drying method is to use a towel. You should
always pat it dry and let it dry naturally. Just make sure it’s
not dripping wet. If you must use a blow dryer then you should
follow these simple guidelines. Always keep the hair dryer 6
inches away from your hair. Over heating your hair will cause
it to dry out and become damaged. You can start off using the
hotter setting but as your hair starts to dry, it is important
to lower the setting. Again, this will help prevent problems
associated with drying. You shouldn’t dry your hair completely
with a blow dryer. Just before it is completely dry, stop and
let it finish naturally. This will help prevent your hair from
getting split ends or breaking.
